New Delhi, October 8 (Daily Kiran) : October is recognized as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time dedicated to educating the public about this serious illness. While breast cancer is often associated with women, the World Health Organization (WHO) has highlighted that men can also be affected by this disease.
According to the WHO, approximately 99% of breast cancer cases occur in women, while men account for about 0.5% to 1% of cases. Though the numbers are small, this does not diminish the need for awareness regarding the risks men face.
The campaign aims to inform people about the importance of early detection and treatment, as well as to provide support for those affected. Men, in particular, often overlook changes in their bodies, such as lumps in the breast, alterations around the nipple, discharge from the nipple, or unusual changes in the skin. These symptoms should never be ignored.
Treatment for breast cancer in men follows similar principles to those used for women, depending on the stage and type of the disease. The WHO stresses the importance of consulting a doctor promptly if any concerning symptoms arise.
Early detection is crucial in the fight against breast cancer. If identified in its initial stages, treatment can begin sooner, improving outcomes. This highlights the need for everyone to remain vigilant about any unusual changes in their bodies.
Globally, breast cancer remains the most common cancer among women. In 2022, around 2.3 million women were diagnosed with the disease, leading to approximately 670,000 deaths. However, survival rates and treatment availability can vary significantly across different countries, often due to disparities in early screening, timely diagnosis, and access to effective treatments.
Raising awareness about breast cancer is vital, not just for women but for men as well. Understanding the risks and recognizing symptoms early can save lives.
