Tejaswin Shankar Makes History with Bronze in Mens Decathlon at CWG 2026

Glasgow, August 1: Tejaswin Shankar made history late Friday night (Indian time) by winning a bronze medal in the men’s decathlon at the Commonwealth Games 2026. Transitioning from a high jumper to a decathlete, Tejaswin became the first Indian athlete to win medals in two different events at the Commonwealth Games. Previously, he secured a bronze in men’s high jump at the 2022 edition in Birmingham.

Tejaswin, the first Indian decathlete to surpass the 8,000-point mark, achieved third place with a score of 7,976 points in Glasgow’s toughest track and field event.

The current Asian champion in both heptathlon and decathlon finished behind Grenada’s Victor Linden, who topped the season with 8,096 points, while Canada’s Damian Warner claimed silver with 8,036 points.

Over several days of competition, the 27-year-old Tejaswin placed seventh in the 100-meter race with a time of 10.96 seconds (870 points). He earned 1,015 points with a long jump of 7.82 meters, securing third place overall.

Tejaswin scored 673 points in shot put, reached a height of 2.15 meters in high jump for 944 points, and finished fifth in the 400-meter race, adding 837 points. After five events, he accumulated a total of 4,339 points, placing him second in the standings.

In the 110-meter hurdles, he earned 922 points, followed by 674 points in discus throw and 704 points in pole vault, which pushed him down to fourth in the overall standings.

A strong performance in javelin throw brought him back into medal contention, and he climbed to third place. By scoring 704 points in the 1,500-meter race, he secured his medal with a total of 7,976 points.

Tejaswin is the national record holder in decathlon and a graduate of Kansas State University, where he won two NCAA Division I titles in high jump. Throughout his career, he has successfully participated in both high jump and combined events at national and international levels.

He gained recognition in high jump after setting an Indian record of 2.29 meters in 2018. At the 2022 Commonwealth Games, he became the first Indian male high jumper to win a bronze medal. Later, he shifted his focus to combined events, winning a silver medal in decathlon at the 2022 Asian Games.
