Teacher Organization Demands CBI Investigation into PhD Admission Irregularities at Jadavpur University

Kolkata, August 31: The All India National Educational Federation (ABRSM) has called for an independent CBI investigation into alleged irregularities in the PhD admissions at Jadavpur University, located in Kolkata, West Bengal.

On Monday, the organization submitted a memorandum to the Vice-Chancellor of Jadavpur University regarding this matter. The letter states, “An audio recording has revealed attempts to include Anustup Chakraborty among the top three candidates for admission into the PhD program in the International Relations Department, despite his rank being 24th on the merit list. He is also associated with the Students’ Federation of India (SFI).”

The letter further expresses serious concerns, noting that the audio conversation repeatedly mentions Prof. Partha Pratim Ray, a CPI(M) leader who later became the President of the Jadavpur University Teachers Association (JUTA). If the audio recording is authentic and the conversation accurate, it raises significant questions about the integrity and transparency of the university’s PhD admission process.

The organization emphasized that any attempt to improperly influence or manipulate the admission process would not only undermine the principles of merit and fairness but also severely damage Jadavpur University’s reputation and academic credibility.

“In light of these circumstances, we respectfully demand that the university take immediate steps to conduct an independent investigation into these allegations by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) or another appropriate central agency, which would be legally and factually sound,” stated the organization.

They seek to determine whether there were any attempts to improperly alter, influence, or manipulate the merit-based PhD admission process in the International Relations Department.

The letter concludes, “Given the seriousness of the allegations and their potential impact on Jadavpur University’s academic integrity and reputation, we request that you take immediate and appropriate action to ensure that the truth emerges through an independent, fair, and reliable investigation, without shielding or targeting any individual. We trust that the university will treat this matter with the seriousness it deserves and take all necessary steps to uphold transparency, merit, fairness, and academic integrity.”
