Beijing, 2 January: Gerson Masigwa, spokesperson for the Tanzania Government and Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Information, Culture, Arts and Sports, in a recent interview with China Media Group, highlighted the launch of the Tanzania-Zambia Railway (TAZARA) reactivation and modernisation project. He said this initiative symbolizes a new chapter in the long-standing friendship and cooperation between China and Africa and will accelerate Africa’s modernisation.

Masigwa explained that the project focuses on modernising the railway’s infrastructure and facilities, enhancing transportation capacity, and integrating the regional transport network. Through this, connectivity, trade, and economic growth between Tanzania, Zambia, and neighbouring countries will receive a significant boost.

TAZARA, originally constructed in the 1970s as China’s first international aid railway project, is a strategic transport artery stretching 1,860.5 kilometres. Its upgrade not only reflects the continuation of historic ties and cooperation among the three nations but also strengthens regional integration.

Masigwa emphasised that the TAZARA railway is not just a symbol of deep friendship among the countries, but also represents a spirit of struggle, unity, and determination. According to him, the railway’s modernisation will be a historic achievement in China’s support for African modernisation and will play a meaningful role in building a shared future community in the new era of China-Africa relations.

He further added that beyond the railway project, cooperation between Tanzania and China is expanding across diverse fields such as science, technology, engineering, agriculture, culture, and sports. Chinese experts continue to support Tanzania’s development efforts, with many landmark projects including modern sports stadiums, buildings, and highways currently under construction.

Masigwa also stated that China is a reliable partner based on principles of equality, mutual benefit, and respect. He stressed that through its modern development experience and achievements, China has injected new energy and momentum into the modernisation efforts of not only Tanzania but the entire African continent.
