Chennai, December 3: Heavy rainfall continued across several coastal districts of Tamil Nadu on Wednesday, marking the third consecutive day of downpours in the region.
Chennai and surrounding districts including Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu and Kancheepuram experienced intense rainfall throughout the day. The continuous downpour led to sudden waterlogging in residential areas, main roads and low-lying regions, disrupting traffic movement and affecting normal public life.
Wednesday became the third consecutive rainy day of this week. Earlier, intermittent rainfall for almost a week had already impacted the daily earnings of small traders and daily wage workers.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), this weather system was earlier active as cyclone ‘Fengal’ but has now weakened. The department stated, “The depression over southwest Bay of Bengal and near north Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coast moved slowly southwestward and intensified into a deep depression.”
As per IMD’s bulletin, this system is likely to weaken further in the next 24 hours, but due to remaining moisture and circulation, heavy rainfall may continue in several districts.
Villupuram, Cuddalore and Tiruvannamalai districts also recorded intermittent heavy rainfall, causing waterlogging in rural areas and temporary disruption to farming activities.
Meanwhile, despite adverse weather conditions, spiritual and cultural traditions remained uninterrupted in Tiruvannamalai. At the famous Arunachaleswarar Temple, priests lit the ‘Bharani Deepam’ in the sanctum sanctorum on Wednesday morning, marking the beginning of the annual Karthigai Deepam festival. Despite heavy rainfall, HR & CE Minister P.K. Sekar Babu, temple officials and hundreds of devotees witnessed this auspicious moment, reflecting the region’s deep cultural faith.
Due to the weather system persisting near the coast, the administration has appealed to people to remain alert, avoid waterlogged areas and follow advice issued by local authorities.
