Chennai, September 24 (Daily Kiran) : In Chennai, the Central Crime Branch (CCB) has summoned three police officers involved in the initial investigation of a POCSO case against granite businessman R. Veeramani. This action comes after the case was closed last year, following a complaint filed in October.
The summoned officers, including Assistant Commissioner Yasmeen and Inspectors Mahesh Kumar and Rajalakshmi, are required to explain the decision to close the case. They will be questioned about how they assessed the complaint, what evidence was gathered, and the rationale behind the report recommending the case’s closure.
Veeramani was arrested under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and was held at Puzhal Jail. His wife, Mahendra Simhan, was also arrested for allegedly aiding in the abuse. Additionally, a former associate of Veeramani, Ganesan, has been taken into custody. This summons marks the next phase of the investigation, which was reopened following a judicial review of the initial police inquiry.
The complaint against Veeramani was lodged in October 2025, but the police initially attempted to dismiss the case. The court rejected this conclusion, calling for a renewed investigation. Subsequent inquiries have led to arrests, shifting the focus to the actions of the officers who handled the original complaint.
Investigators are also looking into allegations regarding Veeramani’s long-term behavior, with claims suggesting that the abuse began in 2003 and continued for nearly 23 years. The court has not yet confirmed the duration or details of these allegations, and the police have not disclosed the number of alleged victims or incidents involved.
The questioning of these officers may clarify whether crucial evidence was overlooked, if necessary leads were ignored, or if there was a valid basis for recommending the case’s closure. However, being summoned does not imply wrongdoing on their part, and no conclusions have been drawn against them at this stage.
