Chennai, April 14: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has taken a firm stand against the central government’s proposed redistricting plan, issuing a warning to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He stated that if the central government proceeds with the redistricting process that affects Tamil Nadu’s parliamentary seats, a significant movement will be initiated in the state.
In a video message shared on the social media platform ‘X’, CM Stalin raised concerns about the issue, questioning, “Is Tamil Nadu, which has succeeded in population control, now being punished?” He described the decision as an ‘injustice’ looming at the state’s doorstep, which will not be accepted under any circumstances.
The Chief Minister accused the central government of attempting to implement redistricting unilaterally, without consulting the states. He argued that this approach undermines the federal structure and weakens the voice of the states. He made it clear that Tamil Nadu will not remain silent on this matter.
Stalin stated, “If the central government advances this process, there will be widespread protests in Tamil Nadu.” He emphasized that this issue transcends mere elections or power; it is fundamentally linked to the state’s self-respect and policies.
He remarked, “For us, elections and governance are secondary; our ideology and self-respect come first.”
The Chief Minister also expressed concerns regarding the upcoming parliamentary session. He noted that the discussions around convening a special session indicate a lack of transparency. He feared that Parliament might be summoned ‘forcefully’ rather than through standard procedures.
Stalin warned that if any actions taken during the parliamentary session affect Tamil Nadu’s representation, there will be strong opposition in the state. He reiterated that the central government has not sought any input from the states on this critical issue.
He further stated that if redistricting is enforced without consent, the central government will witness a Tamil Nadu like never before. Citing the legacy of the Dravidian movement, he suggested that the country might once again witness political resistance reminiscent of the 1950s and 60s.
