Chennai, August 10: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay is set to introduce a special proposal in the state assembly on Monday. The aim of this proposal is to mandate that all government events begin with the state prayer song, ‘Tamil Thai Vaazhthu.’
This proposal comes at a politically significant time, as there has been ongoing controversy regarding the singing of ‘Vande Mataram’ at government events attended by the governor. This issue has sparked protests and political debates across the state. Through this proposal, the Vijay government seeks to implement a uniform protocol that prioritizes ‘Tamil Thai Vaazhthu’ at government events organized by the state and its affiliated institutions.
The proposed protocol is expected to apply to events held in educational institutions, government offices, public sector undertakings, and other state-operated establishments. Under this arrangement, ‘Tamil Thai Vaazhthu’ will be sung at the start of such events.
This initiative arises amidst disagreements over the formal protocols at events attended by the governor. Some political circles have raised objections to the singing of ‘Vande Mataram’ before ‘Tamil Thai Vaazhthu’ at certain events. Critics argue that the established tradition associated with the state prayer song should be respected. It is anticipated that this special proposal will formally reiterate the importance of ‘Tamil Thai Vaazhthu’ at official events and clarify the order of songs to be sung.
When the Chief Minister presents this proposal in the assembly, members from various political parties are expected to participate in the discussion. Before the proposal is submitted for approval, legislators are likely to clarify their respective party stances. Given the cultural and political significance of ‘Tamil Thai Vaazhthu’ in Tamil Nadu, the government may strive to build consensus among all parties. Following the debate, it is hoped that the proposal will receive unanimous approval, clearly indicating the assembly’s collective support for prioritizing the Tamil prayer song in government programs under formal protocol.
This step could establish clear guidelines for future government events and help prevent disputes regarding the order of prayer songs at official functions.
