Tamil Director Bharathiraja Hospitalised with Lung Infection

Mumbai, 5 January. Renowned Tamil film director Bharathiraja is currently in critical condition due to a severe lung infection. The 84-year-old filmmaker was admitted to the hospital recently and shifted to the Critical Care Unit (CCU) for close monitoring by a team of specialist doctors.

According to the medical bulletin released by the hospital, Bharathiraja is receiving all necessary treatments considering his age and related health issues. His condition is stable for now, but he requires continued care in the CCU.

In recent months, Bharathiraja’s health had been deteriorating, especially after returning from abroad where he had been staying with his daughter. Initially treated for general health concerns, he was shifted to Intensive Care Unit (ICU) following increased breathing difficulties.

Last year was particularly challenging for the director on a personal level, as he suffered the loss of his only son, Manoj Bharathiraja, due to a sudden cardiac arrest. This emotional trauma reportedly affected both his mental and physical health significantly.

Bharathiraja began his career in Tamil cinema during the 1970s and quickly established a unique identity. He was known for focusing on stories about rural life, farmers, and common people, at a time when urban narratives dominated the industry. His films not only resonated with audiences but also influenced the language and perspective of Tamil cinema.

He worked with legendary actors such as Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan, and Sridevi, delivering many memorable films. Apart from directing, Bharathiraja also impressed viewers with his simple acting style. His contributions to Indian cinema were recognised with the Padma Shri award by the Government of India.
