Mumbai, February 8: As Prime Minister Narendra Modi embarks on a visit to Malaysia, the historical film “Taj Mahal: An Eternal Love Story,” originally released in 2005, is preparing for a re-release in Malaysia and Indonesia.
A special screening of the film took place in Malaysia, where actress Pooja Batra expressed her joy over the warm reception on social media.
For Batra, who portrayed Noor Jahan, this film holds special significance as it marked her first role in a historical narrative. She shared her gratitude on social media, stating, “Thank you, Malaysia, for honoring us as actors and for showering our film ‘Taj Mahal: An Eternal Love Story’ with immense love. We feel incredibly grateful and blessed to have such an amazing audience in another country.”
The film’s grand premiere in Malaysia and Indonesia was attended by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, highlighting the film’s significance.
The decision has been made to re-release “Taj Mahal: An Eternal Love Story” in a new 4K version. It will hit theaters on February 13, 2026, coinciding with Valentine’s weekend. Alongside Pooja Batra, the film features Kabir Bedi, Sonya Jehan, Manisha Koirala, Arbaaz Khan, and Zulfi Syed. Notably, it was one of the most expensive films of 2005, with lavish sets and costumes, although it did not perform well at the box office.
Media reports indicate that the film earned ₹21 crores in India and approximately ₹31 crores globally, which was about half of its budget. Batra has previously mentioned the film’s importance to her in interviews, stating, “In India, everyone tried to cast me in Western roles. Even while living in India, I received very few offers for Indian roles, and Noor Jahan was one of them. I loved preparing for the character, especially with the heavy jewelry and the distinctive pasaa on my forehead. Noor Jahan’s look was stunning.”
