The Indian T20 team captain successfully completed his fitness test at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. Suryakumar, who last played in the IPL and was named Player of the Series, had undergone sports hernia surgery in June in Munich, Germany. Now fully fit, Suryakumar will attend the selection committee meeting in Mumbai on Tuesday. The Asia Cup will be held in the UAE from 9 to 28 September, with India starting its campaign against the host team on 10 September and facing arch-rival Pakistan on 14 September in Dubai.

A BCCI source told PTI, “A fitness test is mandatory before returning to play after surgery. Suryakumar has passed the fitness test.” After his surgery, Suryakumar had posted on Instagram, “Underwent sports hernia surgery on the lower right side of my abdomen. Happy to share that I am already recovering after the surgery. Eagerly waiting to return.”

The 34-year-old batter had a brilliant IPL season, scoring 717 runs and becoming only the second Mumbai Indians player after Sachin Tendulkar to score over 600 runs in a single season. He was second only to Gujarat Titans’ Sai Sudharsan (759 runs) for the Orange Cap and played a key role in taking Mumbai Indians to the playoffs. The team defeated Gujarat in the eliminator but lost to Punjab Kings in the second qualifier.

Soon after, he played for Triumph Knights Mumbai North East in the T20 Mumbai League, scoring 122 runs in five innings. It is unclear whether the hernia pain increased during this time. Suryakumar also underwent ankle surgery and sports hernia surgery in 2023.
