Suraj Chand Clinches PSA Challenger Tour Title in Chennai

Chennai, April 20: In a remarkable display of skill, India’s Suraj Kumar Chand secured the men’s title at the PSA Challenger Tour event. On Monday, Suraj triumphed over South Korea’s Jeongmin Ryu in straight games at the Indian Squash Academy.

The second-seeded Indian player defeated his eighth-seeded opponent with scores of 11-5, 11-9, and 11-3, marking his fourth PSA Tour title. This victory capped off a dominant performance throughout the tournament. It also marked Suraj’s fifth appearance in a PSA Tour final, showcasing his growing consistency on the professional circuit.

In the women’s category, Egypt’s Rukaya Othman claimed victory by defeating Malaysia’s Harleen Tan in a closely contested final. The seventh-seeded player won against the second seed with scores of 12-10, 11-7, 9-11, and 11-7 to secure the title.

Cyrus Poncha, Secretary General of SRFI, spoke about the event’s success, stating, “We would like to thank our sponsors and partners, especially MYAS and SAI, for their support. Having an Indian player as the winner makes this event even more special.”

Suraj was the only Indian player to reach the semifinals, maintaining his dominance from the start. In the quarterfinals, he easily advanced by defeating compatriot Om Semwal in straight games. He continued his impressive form in the semifinals, overcoming Hong Kong’s Wilok To with scores of 11-8, 11-7, and 11-6 to secure his place in the final.

Semwal had previously impressed with his solid performance, notably defeating Egypt’s Taha Alshafei in the second round. However, his journey ended in the quarterfinals.

Another Indian participant, Aryaveer Diwan, made a remarkable comeback after trailing in two games to defeat Sri Lanka’s Shamil Wakil in a hard-fought match lasting 71 minutes. However, his journey ended in the second round after losing to Suraj with scores of 11-6, 11-7, and 11-8.

Currently ranked 134th in the world, Suraj’s victory is expected to significantly improve his international ranking. This win also highlights the growing prominence of Indian squash on the global stage.
