New Delhi, April 20: Shreyas Iyer, captain of the Punjab Kings, has lauded the young batsman Vaibhav Suryavanshi from Rajasthan Royals, calling him a unique talent. Iyer stated that words fall short in describing Suryavanshi’s exceptional batting skills.
In IPL 2026, Suryavanshi has showcased impressive performance, scoring 246 runs at a strike rate of 236 in six matches. Even top bowlers have struggled against him. Speaking to GeoStar, Iyer remarked, “He is a fantastic talent, and all adjectives fall short when praising him. The way his bat flows and the rhythm and momentum he creates before hitting the ball suggest that he is a player for the future.”
Iyer himself is in good form, averaging 52 with a strike rate of 182.45, having scored 208 runs in six innings. He also discussed a shot he played off Jasprit Bumrah in the second qualifier of IPL 2025. “It was completely instinctive. I was trying to hit it straight down the ground. My focus was on targeting wherever he bowled,” he explained.
He added, “When you reach that position, your head remains calm, and your body moves in a specific flow. You might be facing one of the best bowlers in the world, who bowls with great angles and precision, so you have to trust your instincts. I enjoyed playing that shot and sending it towards third man while staying in the field.”
Iyer mentioned that he did not celebrate after the shot because he knew they would have to return to play again the next day. “If you show emotions, your heartbeat fluctuates. Once you control your feelings, you can clear your mindset and focus on the main goal,” he said.
Under Iyer’s captaincy, the Punjab Kings reached the finals of IPL 2025 but faced defeat against Royal Challengers Bangalore. In IPL 2026, Iyer’s leadership has been remarkable, with the team winning five out of six matches, while one ended in a no-result.
