Supriya Sule Raises Concerns Over Womens Safety in Maharashtra, Writes to CM Fadnavis

Mumbai, April 20: Supriya Sule, the acting president of the Nationalist Congress Party and a Member of Parliament, has expressed grave concerns regarding women’s safety issues in Maharashtra. In a letter addressed to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, she highlighted the alarming state of women’s safety in the region. Sule pointed out a disturbing rise in incidents of violence against women and atrocities against children. She emphasized that it is the government’s responsibility to ensure a safe environment for all citizens.

Sule stated, “Looking at the daily news reports and incidents occurring across the state, it is evident that violence against women has increased. Cases of assault, murder, sexual harassment, domestic violence, kidnapping, and most concerning, child exploitation, are becoming frequent. The crime rate is steadily rising in rapidly growing urban areas like Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, and Nashik, leaving citizens living in fear.”

She further remarked, “In rural areas, the continuous rise in crime has instilled fear among citizens regarding the safety of their daughters, adversely affecting girls’ education, health, and development. This is a serious issue, and the reputation of Maharashtra as a secular state in terms of law and order is deteriorating nationwide, which is deeply concerning. It is the government’s duty to provide a safe environment for women, and immediate action is required.”

Sule urged the government to conduct an immediate review of all districts from the perspective of women’s safety, as the state’s Home Minister. She called for a significant increase in the number of female police officers in the state police force and an enhancement of night patrols. Additionally, she suggested reviewing the ‘Development Committees’ in all districts to ensure they are functioning effectively and providing appropriate guidance to relevant authorities. She also pointed out that the position in the State Women’s Commission is currently vacant and should be activated with full capacity immediately.

To combat domestic violence, Sule recommended strengthening systems at the village level. She insisted that government agencies should be put on high alert to prevent incidents like child marriage. The government should adopt a ‘zero tolerance’ policy towards child marriage and exploitation. Furthermore, she called for immediate guidelines to ensure greater vigilance regarding the safety of female students in schools and colleges.

In conclusion, Sule expressed confidence that Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis would take appropriate action in light of the concerns raised about women’s safety and work towards creating a secure environment for women in Maharashtra.
