New Delhi, April 22: Chief Minister Rekha Gupta inaugurated a ‘Water ATM’ at the Ekta Camp in AU Block, Pitampura, on Wednesday. This initiative, launched under Indian Oil’s CSR program, aims to provide local residents with clean, safe, and affordable drinking water.
During the event, the Chief Minister highlighted the severe heatwave affecting the country. Rising temperatures have led to significant water shortages, particularly troubling for those living in slum areas. In response, Delhi has introduced this new ‘Water ATM’ model, which functions as a large RO plant.
The system can purify approximately 2,000 liters of water per hour. Residents will receive a card to access the Water ATM, allowing them to collect up to 20 liters of clean, sweet water daily. The Chief Minister assured that this water is entirely purified and operates more efficiently than larger RO systems. Importantly, there will be no charges for this service.
Rekha Gupta noted that millions in Delhi have struggled with water issues for a long time. Many areas lack pipelines or sufficient supply, making this model particularly beneficial. So far, eight Water ATMs have been installed with the help of Indian Oil, and plans for further expansion are underway.
The government aims to ensure that clean, potable water reaches every area currently facing shortages. They are working swiftly and plan to introduce additional projects in the future.
At the event, the Chief Minister also discussed other development plans for the area, which will involve an investment of approximately 4 million rupees. This includes the construction of internal streets, improvements to drains and pathways, and the completion of handpump repairs.
Additionally, CCTV cameras will be installed to enhance security. There are also plans to develop a children’s park, providing local kids with a better space to play and learn.
