New Delhi, 08 December (Daily Kiran) – The Supreme Court has directed that 30 percent of seats be reserved for women in the elections of state bar councils where the election process has not yet begun. A bench headed by Chief Justice Surya Kant stated that in states where fewer women are contesting elections, 20 percent reservation should be provided for women, and 10 percent of women lawyers should be co-opted.
During the hearing, the court observed that states such as Andhra Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Telangana, Bihar, and Chhattisgarh are not focusing on women’s reservation in bar council elections where the election process is already underway. In all other state bar councils, 30 percent reservation for women lawyers will be implemented.
The petition was filed by lawyers Yogmaya MG and Shehla Chaudhary. The petition demands one-third reservation for women in all state bar councils across India and at least one position to be reserved for women on a rotational basis.
