Chandigarh, July 16: Sukhbir Singh Badal, the president of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), has launched a fierce attack on the Punjab government and Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann regarding police action against employees and workers in Khanna. He accused the government of using force against peaceful protesters, which he deemed contrary to democratic values.
In a post on the social media platform X, Badal criticized Chief Minister Mann for the police’s response to employees and workers chanting “Satnam Waheguru.” He claimed that the police employed batons, water cannons, and tear gas against the demonstrators.
Badal asserted that the protesters were contract workers and impoverished laborers demanding their overdue wages. This incident occurred when they gathered outside the residence of Cabinet Minister Tarunpreet Singh Sondh in Khanna to voice their demands.
The SAD leader emphasized that in a democratic system, citizens have the right to express their views and protest peacefully. He accused the government of resorting to force rather than listening to the people’s voices, labeling the action as “danda-tantra” instead of democracy.
He stated that no government should attempt to suppress the voice of the public forcefully. Badal criticized the Punjab government for adopting a repressive attitude instead of addressing the issues faced by employees and workers.
In support of the employees and laborers, Badal announced that his party stands firmly with them. He assured the protesting workers that if the Shiromani Akali Dal forms the government in 2027, their pending demands will be prioritized and resolved.
