Sri Lanka Forms Four Special Committees to Address Middle East Tensions

Colombo, March 17: The Sri Lankan government has approved the formation of four special committees to tackle the economic and social challenges arising from ongoing conflicts in the Middle East. This proposal was presented by the President and received cabinet approval.

The government states that these committees aim to maintain the continuity of essential services, stabilize supply chains, and mitigate the impact on the lives of ordinary citizens amid global uncertainties.

A committee dedicated to the energy sector has been tasked with ensuring an uninterrupted supply of fuel, gas, and coal. This committee will work on identifying alternative international suppliers and expediting emergency procurement processes.

Another committee has been established to monitor public services, chaired by the Prime Minister. Its goal is to ensure smooth government operations, support economic activities, and guarantee access to essential services for the general public.

Meanwhile, a third committee, led by the Minister of Transport, Highways, and Urban Development, will oversee the distribution of essential goods. This committee aims to ensure that both public and private supply chains operate without disruption, preventing shortages in the market.

To address social impacts, a fourth committee has been formed, headed by the Minister of Rural Development, Social Security, and Community Empowerment. This committee will identify the effects on vulnerable groups and coordinate with relevant institutions to provide timely assistance.

It is noteworthy that tensions in the Middle East escalated following Israeli and American attacks on Iran, which resulted in the deaths of Iran’s Supreme Leader Khamenei and several top military officials. In retaliation, Iran launched drone and missile strikes on U.S. and Israeli positions, further heightening tensions in the region.
