
New Delhi, April 20: South Korean President Lee Jae-myung arrived in India on Sunday. On Monday, he will participate in a bilateral summit with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The discussions are expected to center on deepening economic ties and strengthening their strategic partnership amid ongoing conflicts in West Asia. Prior to meeting PM Modi, President Lee shared a commendable post about India on social media.
In a video posted on the platform X, President Lee stated, “The world’s most populous and rapidly growing country. If you look closely, there are truly many opportunities for both nations to benefit without any pressure or coercion. Let us embark on a wonderful future together with India, a nation that values peace and democracy. I hope everything goes well.”
President Lee will first pay tribute at Raj Ghat, a memorial dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi, before meeting PM Modi. This summit marks their third face-to-face meeting, following discussions during last year’s G7 and G20 meetings.
According to South Korea’s National Security Advisor, Yi Sung-ryeol, PM Modi and President Lee are likely to explore ways to enhance cooperation in strategic sectors such as shipbuilding, maritime industry, finance, artificial intelligence, and defense.
Collaboration on global supply chains and energy security is also expected to be a top agenda item. Both countries heavily rely on imported energy and are grappling with tensions between the U.S. and Iran.
After the summit, President Lee will join a roundtable with business leaders from both nations and attend a state lunch hosted by President Droupadi Murmu. He arrived in New Delhi for a three-day visit on Sunday.
Corporate Affairs Minister Harsh Malhotra welcomed President Lee and First Lady Kim Hee-kyung at the airport.
On Sunday, External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar met with the South Korean President, appreciating his commitment to enhancing relations across various sectors. He expressed confidence that this visit would further strengthen the special strategic partnership between the two countries.
Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal noted that President Lee’s visit is a significant milestone in advancing the special strategic partnership between South Korea and India. He posted on X, “President Lee Jae-myung received a warm welcome upon arriving in New Delhi for his official visit to India. This is President Lee’s first visit to India.”
