Protests Erupt in Sindh Against Honor Killings in Pakistan

Karachi, April 20: Protests against a longstanding custom have erupted in Sindh, Pakistan. Anger is mounting over the rising incidents of violence against women under the guise of “Karo-Kari” (honor killing). Citizens are raising their voices through demonstrations and street plays to expose this injustice. They are demanding strict action against those who commit murders in the name of honor.

Local media reported on Monday that the human rights organization “Civil Society for Truth, Peace, and Justice” held rallies in Sindh on Sunday. According to a report by the prominent media outlet Dawn, protesters gathered at the local press club in Hyderabad.

The protests were sparked by the alleged honor killings of Khalida Chandio and Shumaila Chandio, as well as the reported suicide of medical student Fahmida Laghari. Participants in the demonstrations called for justice for all victims of honor killings.

Street plays were performed to shed light on the brutal customs associated with these killings. During the protests, it was highlighted that murders under the Karo-Kari tradition continue unabated, as evidenced by the killings of Khalida Chandio in Tando Masti and Shumaila Chandio in Hala. It was emphasized that Fahmida Laghari was so harassed that she took her own life, which should be considered a murder.

Despite a ban on tribal jirgas and the Sindh government passing several laws related to the protection of women, these laws are not being effectively implemented. Activists pointed out that anti-harassment committees in educational institutions are inactive.

Journalists, writers, and intellectuals marched from the local press club in Larkana to Jinnah Bagh Chowk, where they held a demonstration.

Addressing the protesters, speakers stated that women killed under the Karo-Kari tradition are buried without dignity, and such incidents have increased in Sindh.

Speakers demanded that the government file FIRs in honor killing cases and impose the strictest penalties on the perpetrators.

In Jacobabad, a rally was also held from the press club to DC Chowk. According to Dawn, speakers blamed police negligence for recent incidents and noted that the murderers have yet to be apprehended.

In Dadu, a march was held from New Chowk to the local press club. Addressing the crowd, speakers condemned the rising incidents of honor killings, stating that Sindh has become a killing ground for women due to a lack of willpower among authorities. They called for severe punishment for the murderers and effective enforcement of laws protecting women.
