Former all-rounder JP Duminy believes South Africa has a strong chance of winning the Men’s T20 World Cup. Despite their consistent performances, the team has yet to secure a title in this format. In 2024, South Africa reached the final but lost to India.
Speaking on Thursday, Duminy said, “We have been playing excellent cricket over the past year, especially in white-ball formats. The team we have definitely gives us a good chance to win. It has always been a question of when South Africa will win a white-ball tournament. I think this time we have a great opportunity.”
Duminy, who has played six T20 World Cups for South Africa, highlighted the importance of captain Aiden Markram’s form. Markram recently scored 309 runs in nine matches for the Durban Super Giants in the SA20 league.
“For me, player form, especially the captain’s, is crucial. From a batting perspective, his form is very important. If he performs well, it will boost the whole team’s chances significantly,” Duminy added.
The T20 World Cup 2026 will begin on 7 February and is co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka. Currently, South Africa is playing a three-match T20 series against the West Indies and will arrive in India for the World Cup matches afterwards.
South Africa is placed in Group D and will start its campaign on 9 February at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad against Canada. They will then face Afghanistan on 11 February, New Zealand on 14 February, and the UAE on 18 February.
