New Delhi, March 18: Activist Sonam Wangchuk from Ladakh stated on Tuesday that the government’s willingness to engage in “creative and meaningful dialogue” is the primary goal of his movement.
In his first public statement after being released from detention under the National Security Act, Wangchuk spoke to reporters, expressing that the proposal for dialogue is a positive step aligned with the demands he and his supporters have made from the beginning.
He remarked, “As I mentioned, they have proposed creative and meaningful dialogue. In fact, this is what we were fighting for—to initiate conversations.”
Wangchuk reflected on the protest methods used during the movement, stating, “I have always said that I do not want to go on a hunger strike. If someone remains hungry for a week, who cares? I never want to fast; I do it out of necessity. Whenever I have to, I do it. And I have full faith.”
He further noted that the legal battle surrounding the issue has gradually unveiled the truth behind the events occurring in Ladakh.
He stated, “Everything that happened in Ladakh was due to them. However, as layers were peeled back in the Supreme Court of India, the truth and falsehood began to clear.”
Wangchuk was detained under the NSA and held in Jodhpur Central Jail. He also discussed the personal challenges he faced during his detention.
He explained, “In jail, it is believed that those detained are the most dangerous. There was complete isolation, so much so that I could only see the faces of those in uniform.”
Expressing gratitude towards his legal team, Wangchuk acknowledged that their pro bono assistance gave him confidence that justice would prevail.
He said, “Thank you to our wonderful team of lawyers who provided us with free support while fulfilling their social responsibility; we were confident of our victory in court.”
Wangchuk also thanked his supporters across the country, stating that their attention and unity played a crucial role in achieving this outcome.
“I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to all of you. In fact, it is because of your overwhelming support and love that all of this has been possible.” He added that many others are facing similar accusations and deserve equal attention and support.
Meanwhile, Wangchuk’s wife, Geetanjali J. Angmo, urged people to rise above debates of victory or defeat and focus on dialogue. She said, “We should move beyond discussions of winning or losing. This is not about bowing to anyone.”
Angmo emphasized that strength and truth ultimately yield positive results. She stated, “My principle has always been that hard work pays off, strength leads to good outcomes, and the truth always prevails.”
She expressed hope for meaningful discussions with officials to find a concrete solution for Ladakh soon.
She added, “We will talk to each other and understand why certain things are not possible. Conversations that previously took a long time will now happen quickly, and we will move towards the right solution for Ladakh.”
Wangchuk was released from Jodhpur Central Jail on Saturday after the central government ended his detention under the National Security Act, raising hopes for renewed discussions on governance, environmental, and developmental issues in Ladakh.
