Berlin, February 14: Shafi Burfat, Chairman of the Jeay Sindh Muttahida Mahaz (JSM), has condemned the presence of Pakistani Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir at the Global Security Forum held across Europe. Burfat described this invitation as an affront to communities facing oppression and occupation in the South Asian nation.
The Sindhi leader emphasized that Munir has effectively placed Pakistani politics, the judiciary, business, and media under military dominance, making it impossible for him to genuinely advocate for peace.
Burfat stated, “The presence of Munir at major international conferences in countries like Germany and across Europe is an insult to those communities being suppressed and persecuted in Pakistan. It is akin to pouring salt on the wounds of victims enduring oppression.”
He further expressed on the social media platform X, “The so-called Field Marshal of Pakistan, Asim Munir, is deeply involved in systematic oppression, enforced disappearances, torture, and extrajudicial killings of Sindhis, Baloch, and Pashtuns, among other subjugated nations.”
Burfat continued, “Political activists are kidnapped, brutally tortured, and their mutilated bodies are discarded to instill fear. Human rights violations are rampant under his command. The same military establishment that has fueled religious extremism and terrorism in the region now seeks to establish its identity on an international platform.”
In a letter addressed to the United Nations, European Union, and the global human rights community, Burfat raised ethical objections to the inclusion of Pakistan’s military leadership in the Munich Security Conference scheduled for February 13-15.
He highlighted ongoing complaints from Sindh, Balochistan, and other regions regarding political pressure, cultural discrimination, and economic exclusion.
Burfat pointed out that Pakistan’s harboring of Osama bin Laden has significantly damaged the country’s international reputation and heightened global concerns regarding its counterterrorism commitments.
He remarked, “This incident remains a crucial part of the debate on Pakistan’s security policy and international responsibilities. Given this historical and political context, it is deeply troubling that Pakistan’s military leadership is being invited to a forum dedicated to global peace and security.”
Burfat concluded that the Munich Security Conference, which strives to uphold humanitarian respect and democratic values, should carefully consider the implications of Islamabad’s participation in light of ongoing human rights violations by the Pakistani military.
