London, July 20: India faced a 27-run defeat against England in the third ODI match. Chasing a daunting target of 388 runs at Lord’s, the Indian team managed to score only 360 runs, losing 7 wickets. Indian captain Shubman Gill held the bowlers accountable for the loss.
After the match, Gill acknowledged that conceding too many runs in the last three overs proved costly for the team. He stated, “I believe we were in the game until the 45th over. We gave away too many runs in the final three overs. I think we conceded around 60 runs, and that’s where the match slipped away from us.”
Gill expressed confidence that the team could have successfully completed the chase. He remarked, “Yes, absolutely, we thought if we had wickets in hand after 40 overs, we would remain in the match. However, we also didn’t want to fall too far behind. That’s why I think we started scoring runs after the powerplay and maintained a run rate around six or six and a half. If we had continued at that rate and scored 100-110 runs in the last 10 overs, anything could have happened.”
According to the Indian captain, the bowlers’ performance in this series has been disappointing. He commented, “Yes, I mean, almost all the batsmen have scored runs in the matches. I think we didn’t bowl well in this match, especially during the powerplay. We bowled a lot of bad deliveries in the powerplay. Then, after the powerplay, both openers capitalized on the opportunities brilliantly. They didn’t give us any chance to get back into the match. After that, in the final overs, as I said, they got way ahead of us.”
Praising the batting of Kohli and Rohit, Gill said, “They (Kohli and Rohit) have performed exceptionally well in different parts of the world over the past few years. I am very pleased with the way Rohit batted in this match. I think the wicket got a bit slower towards the end. Scoring those runs wasn’t easy. However, in my opinion, watching the way they batted was truly fantastic.”
England batted first, scoring 387 runs for the loss of 3 wickets in their 50 overs. Ben Duckett played a remarkable innings of 141 runs, while Jacob Bethel contributed 91 runs. Joe Root added an unbeaten 74 runs off just 48 balls. Despite strong performances from Rohit Sharma (138 runs), Virat Kohli (74 runs), and Shubman Gill (77 runs), the Indian team fell short of the target by 27 runs. With this victory, England claimed the three-match series 2-1.
