Shreyas Iyer Acknowledges Bowling Shortcomings After Fourth T20 Loss in Auckland

Indian captain Shreyas Iyer reflects on the teams bowling issues following an 87-run defeat to New Zealand in the fourth T20 match.

Auckland, October 30 (Daily Kiran) : Indian captain Shreyas Iyer admitted that his team’s bowling performance fell short against New Zealand in the fourth T20 match. The game, held at Eden Park, ended with India suffering an 87-run defeat, marking New Zealand‘s first victory in the five-match series. Iyer noted that the hosts gained significant momentum during the powerplay, particularly in the third over.

New Zealand posted a formidable total of 259 for 7, their highest score in T20 history, thanks to Glenn Phillips, who scored an impressive 107 runs off 49 balls, and Michael Bracewell, who contributed 65 runs off just 25 deliveries. In response, India managed only 172 runs, losing nine wickets in their allotted 20 overs. Jacob Duffy was the standout bowler for New Zealand, taking four wickets.

After the match, Iyer acknowledged the inadequacies in India’s bowling. He praised Phillips for his outstanding innings, stating, “Yes, absolutely. I think we lacked in our bowling early on. They gained momentum in the third over of the powerplay. Some of our bowlers tried to create pressure, but Glenn played a really fantastic innings. He hit some great shots, which was a pleasure to watch. Congratulations to him. He has been consistently performing well throughout the series, so there’s a lot to learn from him.”

Iyer emphasized the need for the team to review their performance and improve their strategy before the final T20 in Hamilton. He expressed, “I think it’s important to look back and understand where we can bounce back. We will take a short break before heading to Hamilton. We need to work on our strategy again, analyze things, and try to perform to our full potential in the next match.”

The captain also mentioned that adapting to the dimensions of New Zealand’s grounds has been a challenge for some Indian players, especially those playing in such conditions for the first time. However, he commended the team’s efforts in the first three matches and suggested viewing this loss as a learning opportunity.

He remarked, “Our conversation was simply that we knew the size of the grounds would be like this, and for some players, it was their first time playing on such fields. It takes a little time to adapt to this challenge. It’s not that easy, I understand, but the way they performed in the first three matches was excellent. I think it’s a good learning experience. Next time they come here, they will have a better idea of how to play. This has been a great learning opportunity, and hopefully, we will return with a positive mindset in the next match.”

With this defeat, India, who had already won the first three matches of the series, now leads 3-1. The teams will meet again in Hamilton for the fifth T20, where India will aim to conclude the series on a winning note.
