Assams Chief Minister Aims to Curb Youth Migration Through Investment and Industrial Growth

Assams CM Himanta Biswa Sarma emphasizes attracting investment to create jobs and reduce youth migration from the state.

Guwahati, October 30 (Daily Kiran) : Assam’s Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, announced on Friday that his government is working to prevent youth migration by attracting investments, expanding industries, and creating job opportunities within the state.

Sarma highlighted that insufficient investment and job availability are driving young people to leave Assam. He noted that employment in the public sector has been one of the few options, which is inadequate for the state’s large and growing youth population.

The Chief Minister stated that the COVID-19 pandemic has reinforced his determination to address this issue. He observed that many students and young professionals have had to work away from home during the pandemic due to a lack of job opportunities in Assam, a trend that continues for many.

Sarma emphasized that the government’s goal is to enable Assam to provide jobs for its residents while also attracting skilled professionals and talent from across the country and the globe.

He linked the promotion of investment to enhanced security, stating that peace agreements and stability have facilitated development. Since his administration took office, investment has been a priority, with efforts ranging from announcements to implementation.

As an example, Sarma mentioned the inauguration of an integrated cement plant in Dima Hasao, which has an initial investment commitment of ₹1,800 crores, expected to create around 1,000 jobs. He noted that the cement company has pledged a total investment of approximately ₹11,000 crores in Assam, with further phases anticipated.

Moreover, he reported that most memorandums of understanding signed under the Advantage Assam 2.0 initiative have been implemented.
