Students Rally in Patna to Defend Democracy and Constitutional Values

Students in Patna protested for democratic values, clashing with police as they marched for constitutional integrity.

Patna, October 30 (Daily Kiran) : Students and youth affiliated with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) staged a protest in Patna on October 30, demanding the preservation of democratic values and the dignity of constitutional institutions. The march, themed “Save Democracy—Stop Anarchy,” commenced at Gandhi Maidan.

As the protesters reached JP Golambar, some broke through police barricades and advanced toward Dak Bungalow Chowk, causing temporary chaos in the area. The district administration had set up barricades on both sides to prevent the demonstrators from moving forward. A heavy police presence, including water cannons and riot control vehicles, was deployed to maintain law and order and avert any untoward incidents.

Despite adverse weather conditions, the protesters persisted in their march and successfully crossed the barricades. Among the prominent figures at the protest was Yash Dubas, the president of the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU), who climbed a barricade to address the crowd.

Dubas criticized political opponents, claiming that those currently advocating for constitutional protection are the same individuals creating disorder in the country. He also referenced the Emergency period, accusing past generations of undermining constitutional values.

In light of the protest, security measures were heightened in central Patna, with police forces stationed at key locations to manage the movement of demonstrators. ABVP activists stated that their demonstration aimed to express concerns over the functioning of democracy and constitutional institutions, bringing the issue to the forefront of Bihar’s political discourse.

Looking ahead, the India Block has scheduled a significant rally on November 1 at Ram Leela Maidan in New Delhi, with expectations of attendance from leaders of over 20 political parties. Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Yadav from the RJD noted that many people from Bihar are traveling to Delhi for the rally. He alleged that individuals from neighboring states, including Haryana, western Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan, are being stopped at various points along the Delhi border.
