Chennai, September 6 (Daily Kiran) : Shreyas Gopal achieved a significant milestone by playing his 100th first-class match during the Duleep Trophy final between South Zone and East Zone in Chennai. Gopal described this achievement as “incredible.”
Having been a key player for Karnataka in domestic cricket, Gopal emphasized the importance of this moment. He shared his feelings in a video posted by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on social media platform X, stating, “Playing my 100th first-class match is truly incredible, and the Duleep Trophy final makes it even more special. As a child, you dream of playing a few matches for your state, but hardly anyone dreams of reaching 100 matches. So, this is a unique feeling.”
Since making his first-class debut in 2013, Gopal has faced both successes and challenges in his career. He reflected on the memories he has created over the years, saying, “There have been many memories over the last few years—good, bitter, disappointing, and joyful. It’s a mixed emotion, but standing here to play my 100th match brings immense joy and pride. As I said, the last few years have required a lot of hard work. Playing on Indian pitches can be tough, and achieving something there demands significant effort.”
Gopal began his career with Karnataka, playing a crucial role in the team’s Ranji Trophy victory during the 2013-14 season, where he took 22 wickets. After a stint with Kerala for the 2023-24 season, he returned to Karnataka and helped the team win the Vijay Hazare Trophy in the 2024-25 domestic season.
He added, “When you enter first-class cricket, I was told that staying in the game for so many years is not easy; it’s the toughest job. Now that I’m at this stage, I understand why they said that. The journey has been challenging, yet very fulfilling.”
The spinner concluded, “The most important lesson I’ve learned is discipline and perseverance. Without these, you won’t play many matches. I want to dedicate this milestone to my family, parents, wife, and certainly to my close friends and the fans who have supported me throughout my journey.”
