Washington, April 5: The U.S. Secret Service responded early Sunday to reports of gunfire near Lafayette Park, prompting heightened security measures around the White House. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported, and no suspects were immediately apprehended.
The Secret Service stated that officers were dispatched to the scene shortly after midnight following reports of shooting in the park, located directly north of the White House.
In a statement, the agency confirmed, “A thorough search of the park and surrounding area was conducted, but no suspects were found. There are also no reports of injuries.”
Anthony Guglielmi, the communications chief for the Secret Service, remarked, “We are investigating the gunfire that occurred in the park area during the night. Anyone with information is urged to contact D.C. police.”
Authorities indicated that the Secret Service’s Uniformed Division, along with the Metropolitan Police Department and U.S. Park Police, are searching for a potential vehicle and a suspect. The investigation is ongoing.
Initial reports suggest the incident occurred around 1 a.m., after which multiple law enforcement agencies arrived on the scene and secured the streets north of the White House. Local media reported that police are searching for a suspect.
Despite the proximity of the incident to the presidential residence, officials stated that operations at the White House were not affected. Activities continued as normal, although security measures were tightened.
As a precaution, several surrounding streets were closed, including parts of H Street NW, I Street NW, and 16th Street NW. Authorities have established a security perimeter around Lafayette Park.
Journalists and witnesses reported a heavy police presence in the area, with flashing lights and officers conducting investigations. Officials have appealed to the public for any information or video footage related to the incident.
