New Delhi, June 19: Congress leader Shashi Tharoor expressed astonishment and dismay on Friday regarding the alleged misappropriation of millions in donations at the Ram Janmabhoomi Temple in Ayodhya. He described this as a severe betrayal of the faith and trust of millions of Hindus.
In a special interview with a news agency, Tharoor discussed various topics, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s extended tenure, the defection of leaders from the Trinamool Congress, and the U.S.-Iran peace agreement. He condemned the alleged misuse of funds at the Ram Temple as unacceptable and disgraceful.
Tharoor stated, “This is truly shocking. Temples are centers of faith. People visit, pray, and make donations. When you contribute to a donation box or offer something to God, it is meant for the temple. It serves a sacred purpose and should be used solely for the temple, not for any other reason.”
He further emphasized that discovering the embezzlement of not just lakhs but crores of rupees is a significant betrayal of trust and faith.
Tharoor expressed deep shock at the scale of this deception against millions of Hindu devotees. He was also troubled by the thought of how such fraud would have affected those involved, particularly those managing the financial transactions at the temple.
Recently, allegations surfaced regarding financial irregularities in the temple’s donations. It is claimed that several employees responsible for handling funds and jewelry from devotees both domestic and international misappropriated these for personal gain, reportedly using the money to build luxurious homes.
Additionally, Tharoor congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi on becoming the longest-serving elected Prime Minister. He noted that Modi’s strong presence on the national stage has left a significant impact on various aspects of Indian life, society, and politics.
Tharoor praised Modi’s energy, enthusiasm, vision, and oratory skills, stating that he is among the best speakers India has seen. He also pointed out that Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi served longer as Prime Ministers, although their tenures were different.
