Beijing, May 9: The International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced on Thursday that Shanghai, Tokyo, Montreal, and Orlando will host the Olympic qualifying series for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
This marks the second time Shanghai will host this significant event, following the 2024 Paris Olympic qualifiers.
The Los Angeles Olympic qualifying series will consist of four phases. Two of these will take place in Asia, specifically in Tokyo and Shanghai, during May 2028, while the other two phases will be held in North America, in Montreal and Orlando, in June 2028. Each phase is expected to feature sports such as 3×3 basketball, beach volleyball, freestyle BMX, rock climbing, flag football, and skateboarding.
The IOC initiated this qualifying series during the Paris Olympic cycle to maintain the excitement of the Olympic movement beyond the limited days of the Olympic Games and to engage youth more with sports. IOC President Kirsty Coventry stated that this series will serve as an exciting global competition leading up to the Los Angeles Olympics.
She emphasized that fans will be at the center of the event, which will also showcase an atmosphere of music, culture, and celebration alongside the sports.
Notably, during the 2024 qualifying series, both Shanghai and Budapest successfully hosted events. This time, the competition in Shanghai will be held in the city’s western coastal area, known as the “Shanghai West Bund,” which is part of the city’s world-class waterfront. According to the Shanghai Municipal Sports Bureau, the event will be themed around “youth, city, creativity, and energy,” aiming to propel shared development for the youth and the city.
