Mumbai, March 7: In a significant development, police have arrested a second suspect in the case involving the discovery of live cartridges in a hostel room at IIT Bombay. The accused, 24-year-old Prashant Raj Yadav, was apprehended in Ujjain while returning from a religious pilgrimage, according to Mumbai police.
Authorities revealed that Yadav, a resident of Bihar, works as a real estate agent. He is accused of sharing images of weapons with the first arrested suspect.
On February 19, five live cartridges of 7.65 mm were found in the room of first-year B.Tech student Apurv Mishra. Mishra had a friendship with the previously arrested suspect, Sarvottam Chaudhary, who allegedly brought the cartridges to him.
During police questioning, it was disclosed that Mishra claimed he kept the cartridges merely to impress other students and had no intention of causing harm.
The investigation also uncovered that Chaudhary and Yadav had allegedly discussed purchasing weapons, although the deal was never finalized.
The case came to light when police received a tip-off about cartridges in Mishra’s possession. Upon investigation, five live 7.65 mm cartridges were recovered from his bag.
Police officials stated that a dispute over money occurred between two students on the ground floor of Hostel Number 1. The security team intervened and calmed Suraj Dubey and Aman, who resided in rooms 93 and 89, respectively. During the conversation, a smell of alcohol led to a search of the rooms.
During the search, five live cartridges marked ‘KF 7.65’ were found in a black bag in Dubey’s room, estimated to be worth around ₹3,500. During questioning, Dubey identified the bag as belonging to Mishra. Mishra later claimed the cartridges belonged to his friend Sarvottam Chaudhary, a resident of Samastipur, Bihar.
According to police, Chaudhary allegedly admitted to purchasing the cartridges from Munger in Bihar. Subsequently, police registered a case against him for illegal possession and transportation of ammunition.
