AITC MP Defends Freedom of Expression Amid Jamia Millia Islamia Controversy
AITC MP Sougata Roy speaks out on the Jamia Millia Islamia Free Kashmir controversy, emphasizing democratic rights and condemning BJPs propaganda.

New Delhi, October 24 (Daily Kiran) : AITC MP Sougata Roy recently addressed the ongoing controversy surrounding the “Free Kashmir” slogans at Jamia Millia Islamia University in New Delhi. He emphasized the importance of freedom of expression in a democratic nation, stating that individuals should be allowed to voice their opinions without fear of backlash.
In a conversation with a news agency, Roy remarked, “This is a democratic country. People have the right to express their views. There should be no uproar over this. Jamia Millia is a historic institution founded by Zakir Husain, known for its quality education. Students there are entitled to their opinions. What’s the issue with that? This is merely useless propaganda by the BJP.”
Commenting on Congress MP Imran Masood’s statements regarding Kashmir, Roy clarified, “Just because someone expresses such an opinion doesn’t mean Kashmir will become free. Kashmir is an integral part of India and will always remain so. However, I support the demands related to student union elections.”
Regarding the Delhi High Court’s dismissal of a petition by AISA president Neha Bora, Roy expressed his disappointment, stating, “I have seen this, and it saddens me. Neha Bora is a young girl doing her best, and I support her. She is very brave.”
On allegations that three Christian families in Chandrakona were forced to adhere to Hindu rituals during Durga Puja, Roy condemned the incident as tragic. He noted that the Christian community is small and educated, and any coercion against them is unacceptable.
He added that past incidents of oppression by the BJP in Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, and elsewhere should not be repeated. With recent events in West Bengal, he called for the Chief Minister to take notice and address these issues.
