Sanitation Workers Protest in Jamtara Over Four-Month Payment Delay

Sanitation workers in Jamtara protested by dumping trash on streets due to unpaid wages for four months, impacting cleanliness during the festival.

Jamtara, October 15 (Daily Kiran) : Sanitation workers in Jamtara, Jharkhand, staged a unique protest on Thursday against not receiving their wages for the past four months. Workers employed under the municipal council expressed their grievances by dumping garbage on the city’s main roads, raising concerns about cleanliness during the busy Durga Puja festival.

The protest began at the municipal office and progressed through Subhash Chowk to Tower Chowk. As the workers scattered trash on the streets, chaos ensued in the city. The unexpected demonstration heightened fears that the cleanliness system would be compromised during the festival, leading to potential public health issues.

According to the protesting workers, they have repeatedly approached relevant officials regarding their unpaid wages, but no concrete resolution has been reached. This prolonged delay has resulted in significant financial strain for them, prompting the public display of their frustrations.

The workers have made it clear that they will continue their protest until their overdue payments are made. This ongoing unrest threatens to disrupt the city’s sanitation efforts, particularly during a time when maintaining cleanliness is crucial.

In response to the situation, Soma Khandet, the executive officer of Jamtara Municipal Council, acknowledged the protest and stated that necessary arrangements are being made to address the issue. However, there is currently no clear timeline for when the workers can expect their four months of back pay to be settled.
