
Mumbai, March 24: Samsung’s S Pen has been a key feature of its flagship devices for over a decade, particularly in the Galaxy Ultra series. Initially, there were high hopes that the Galaxy S27 Ultra would introduce a significant upgrade to the stylus. However, a recent report suggests that this upgrade may not materialize just yet.
According to Korean news outlet ETNews, Samsung had been experimenting with a new S Pen technology for the S27 Ultra. Nevertheless, the company has decided to postpone this innovation for the time being. As a result, the device is expected to continue using the existing Electromagnetic Resonance (EMR) system that has been in place for years.
For context, EMR enables the S Pen to function without a battery. The phone’s display features a dedicated digitizer layer that accurately tracks the pen’s movements. However, this system is dependent on a magnetic field, which can be disrupted by built-in magnets or magnetic accessories.
In contrast, the alternative technology, Active Electrostatic (AES), operates differently. It eliminates the digitizer layer and relies on a battery-powered stylus that interacts directly with the touchscreen, similar to the Apple Pencil. Since AES does not depend on magnetism for tracking, strong alignment magnets within the phone should not significantly impact its performance.
This shift could allow Samsung to incorporate magnets directly into the device without compromising S Pen functionality, an issue that older Galaxy S models have faced when used with magnetic cases.
Interestingly, Samsung was reportedly exploring a hybrid solution that aimed to merge both technologies. The goal was to eliminate the digitizer layer while still maintaining a battery-free pen.
For now, it appears that Samsung is opting for a cautious approach. While the S27 Ultra may not feature a substantial S Pen upgrade, it is clear that a more significant enhancement is in development, albeit not ready for release yet.
