Saints Unite for Mahakal Standard Time, Emphasizing Ujjains Ancient Significance

New Delhi, April 5: Saints and spiritual leaders across India have expressed strong support for the proposal by Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan to adopt Mahakal Standard Time (MST) in place of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). They believe it is time for the world to recognize MST as a global time system, aligning with Indian Sanatan traditions and ancient astronomical knowledge.

In a conversation from Nashik, Swami Jitendranand Saraswati, the National General Secretary of the All India Saints Committee, stated, “The current GMT system is geographically based, while in our Sanatan tradition, ‘Mahakal’ is considered the ultimate basis of time. The Shri Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga in Ujjain has been a center for time and astronomical calculations since ancient times. The world should adopt MST in accordance with Indian culture.”

Swami Gopalacharya Maharaj, President of the All India Saints Committee, spoke from Rishikesh, saying, “The Sanatan tradition has always been scientifically accurate. Our sages calculated planetary movements, solar and lunar eclipses, and full moons accurately centuries ago. Dependence on GMT reflects our mental slavery. This is a beautiful subject, and understanding the robustness of the Sanatan tradition is essential before delving into it.”

Dr. Yoganand Giri, the Mahant of the Panchdashnam Juna Akhara from Mirzapur, supported Minister Pradhan’s statement, asserting, “Ujjain is the focal point of Jyotirlingas in the mortal realm, while the Tropic of Cancer’s center is in Chhattisgarh. The center of each region should remain where it belongs. There should be no attempt to distort history.”

Several prominent saints from Ayodhya also strongly backed the proposal. Arya Saint Varun Das Ji Maharaj, Satendra Das Vedanti Ji Maharaj (Mahant of Ram Janaki Temple), Sitaram Das Ji Maharaj (Mahant of Saket Bhavan Temple), and Mahant Dr. Deveshacharya Ji Maharaj (Siddh Peeth Hanumangarhi) stated that adopting Mahakal Standard Time would give Indian culture a new identity. They view this as a positive and commendable step.

The saint community unanimously asserts that Ujjain has been the center of global time calculation since ancient times. The astronomical traditions here and the significance of the Mahakaleshwar Temple have gained global recognition. They argue that adopting MST will not only enhance India’s cultural pride but also connect more rationally with ancient Indian knowledge traditions.

It is noteworthy that Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan proposed this during the international conference ‘Mahakal: The Master of Time’ in Ujjain. He highlighted that Ujjain lies on the Tropic of Cancer and was historically the reference point for global time calculation. Now is the time to replace GMT with MST.
