RSS Pays Tribute to Raj Narayan Basu on His 200th Birth Anniversary

On Raj Narayan Basus 200th birth anniversary, the RSS honors his contributions to national consciousness and social reform in India.

New Delhi, November 3 (Daily Kiran) : On November 3, 2026, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) paid homage to Raj Narayan Basu, a pivotal figure in India’s national consciousness, on the occasion of his 200th birth anniversary. The organization’s General Secretary highlighted Basu’s significant role in fostering a sense of national pride and cultural dignity within Indian society. His ideas remain remarkably relevant today.

In a statement, the General Secretary noted that India’s struggle for independence is a glorious chapter in the nation’s history. The British invasion had distanced educated Indians from their cultural roots. During this challenging time, many prominent figures, including Basu, endeavored to awaken national consciousness and clarify the country’s identity.

Born on December 7, 1826, in Borhal village of South 24 Parganas, Bengal, Raj Narayan Basu dedicated his life to social reform after completing his education. He was committed to uplifting the poor, eradicating substance abuse, promoting women’s education, and advocating for widow remarriage. Notably, he set an example by marrying off his brother to a widow.

Basu tirelessly worked to instill a sense of national pride, self-respect, and confidence among the educated class. He believed that without these qualities, a nation’s progress was unattainable. To further his objectives, he drafted a framework titled “Prospectus of a Society for Promotion of National Feeling.”

His efforts led to the establishment of the Hindu Mela in 1867 by Nabagopal Mitra, which became a crucial platform for the development and dissemination of national consciousness. Through this platform, Basu promoted the use of indigenous products and encouraged a sense of nationalism. The General Secretary emphasized that Basu placed great importance on the use of one’s mother tongue, viewing it as a critical foundation for self-respect and national consciousness. He regarded Hinduism as the bedrock of India’s cultural and national unity.

In 1873, he authored “The Superiority of Hinduism,” which highlighted the philosophical strength and uniqueness of Hindu culture. He is often referred to as the patriarch of Indian national consciousness and conceptualized the “Maha Hindu Committee” to further cultural and national awakening, which he elaborated on in his influential pamphlet “Vriddha Hindu Ki Asha” (The Hope of an Old Hindu) published in the 1880s.

The statement also mentioned that Raj Narayan Basu was the grandfather of Maharishi Sri Aurobindo, whose nationalist views were deeply influenced by Basu. Many prominent figures associated with the Indian national renaissance and the freedom movement, including Rabindranath Tagore, Swami Vivekananda, and Sister Nivedita, held Basu in high esteem and drew inspiration from his life and thoughts.

In his tribute, the General Secretary remarked that Basu’s ideas and philosophy continue to resonate today. They remind us of the importance of self-respect, connection to cultural heritage, and national unity. The nation will forever be grateful for his contributions.
