Mumbai, October 30 (Daily Kiran) : Former explosive batsman Robin Uthappa has been appointed as the batting coach for the Mumbai Indians (MI), marking a significant return to the franchise where he began his IPL career in 2008. Uthappa’s announcement came on October 30, 2026, as he expressed excitement about his new role.
In his first interview as batting coach, Uthappa shared his observations of MI’s evolution into one of the world’s top franchises, stating, “I have seen Mumbai earn the trust and confidence of fans, becoming champions and consistently winning.” He acknowledged the current need to regain that trust, noting that the team now finds itself in a position where they must win back the fans’ confidence.
Uthappa reflected on his debut season with MI, recalling the excitement of joining the team while playing in Australia during the CB Series auction. He expressed his enthusiasm about playing alongside his idol, Sachin Tendulkar, and reminisced about the challenges faced during that inaugural season, including injuries that affected key players like Tendulkar and captaincy changes.
He emphasized the importance of instilling confidence in domestic players, aiming to empower them to express themselves freely on the field. Uthappa described the emotional investment he has in the players he mentors, recalling a moment of pride when one of his mentees was selected for the Indian Test squad.
The former Kolkata Knight Riders star, who played a pivotal role in their 2014 IPL championship victory, believes that MI can be a formidable force at home. He aims to carry the same energy and emotion from home games into every match, ensuring that opposing teams feel the pressure of facing Mumbai Indians. Uthappa is eager to embark on this journey of rekindling the underdog spirit and making it a memorable experience for the franchise and its supporters.
