Srinagar MP Agha Ruhullah Issues Public Invitation Amid Speculation of Leaving National Conference

Agha Ruhullah Mehdi of the National Conference invites public to a significant event, sparking rumors of his resignation from the party.

Srinagar, October 30 (Daily Kiran) : Agha Ruhullah Mehdi, a Member of Parliament from Srinagar and a prominent leader of the National Conference, has issued a public invitation for an event scheduled for November 3. Speculation is rife that he may announce his resignation from both the National Conference and the Lok Sabha during this gathering.

Posters have been displayed in various locations, urging the public to attend the event. Many political observers anticipate a major announcement from the MP. The invitation details a program titled “Announcement of Resignation,” set to take place at the Behesht-e-Zahra Park in Budgam, near the Deputy Commissioner’s office.

The event is open to the general public, and the posters highlight its significance, describing it as a major political declaration and emphasizing the need to give a voice to the voiceless.

However, the invitation does not specify the reasons or circumstances surrounding his potential resignation. Political circles are closely monitoring the situation, with many eager to see what steps the MP will take next. The posters strongly indicate that the event is indeed linked to his resignation.

Since being elected to the Lok Sabha in 2024, Mehdi has expressed dissatisfaction with the National Conference, claiming the party has failed to fulfill promises made to voters in its election manifesto.

Notably, Mehdi did not participate in the campaign for the National Conference candidate, Agha Syed Mahmood, during last year’s by-election for the Budgam assembly seat. This seat became vacant after Omar Abdullah, the party’s vice president, resigned from it. Abdullah had won both Budgam and Ganderbal seats but opted to retain Ganderbal, necessitating the by-election in Budgam.

In that by-election, National Conference candidate Agha Syed Mahmood was defeated by the People’s Democratic Party’s (PDP) Agha Syed Muntazir Mehdi. Following his resignation on November 3, there have been unconfirmed speculations regarding Mehdi’s potential switch to the Congress party, though neither the Congress nor Mehdi himself has verified these rumors.
