On the occasion of his death anniversary, we explore Bollywood films that depict his struggles and iconic characters. Though these films may not have received extensive attention, their stories have certainly captured the hearts of fans.
Films about Veer Savarkar have been made in both Hindi and Marathi, showcasing the influence of regional languages. First, let’s discuss Randeep Hooda‘s film “Swatantrya Veer Savarkar,” for which the actor even sold his house. Hooda portrayed Savarkar, bringing depth to the character. However, the film had average box office collections and faced various protests.
Priyadarshan’s “Kalapani” was one of the early films to mention Veer Savarkar. This movie focused on Indian freedom fighters imprisoned by the British Raj in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Anu Kapoor played the role of Savarkar. Released in 1996, “Kalapani” is considered a classic in Malayalam cinema.
The 2001 release “Veer Savarkar” is also a memorable film. Following its release, a Gujarati version was produced as well. This film was the first biography created under the Savarkar Darshan Pratishthan by music composer Sudhir Phadke. Shailendra Gaur portrayed Savarkar, with direction by Ved Rahi.
According to media reports, funds were raised for the film, which also aimed to raise awareness about Savarkar’s contributions.
Another noteworthy film is “What About Savarkar?” released in 2015. While not directly based on Savarkar, it is related to him. This Marathi film tells the story of Abhiman Marathe, who stands up against a corrupt minister who disrespects Savarkar. His friends join him in opposing the minister, portraying the struggle to honor Savarkar.
