Pratapgarh, September 19 (Daily Kiran) : Anupam Shyam Ojha, best known for his portrayal of Thakur Sajjan Singh in the popular series “Mann Ki Awaaz Pratigya,” remains a celebrated figure in Indian entertainment. His powerful voice and compelling performances earned him a unique place in the hearts of audiences across the nation.
Born on September 20, 1957, in Pratapgarh, Uttar Pradesh, Shyam developed a passion for acting at a young age. He completed his early education in Pratapgarh before pursuing higher studies at Awadh University. His theatrical journey began at the Bharatendu Natya Academy in Lucknow, where he honed his craft. After training, he joined the Shri Ram Centre for Performing Arts in Delhi, gaining invaluable experience in theater before moving to Mumbai to chase his dreams.
Shyam’s journey in Mumbai was fraught with challenges. Initially, he landed minor roles, but his breakthrough came with the international film “Little Buddha.” He later appeared in Shekhar Kapur’s acclaimed movie “Bandit Queen.” Over the years, he made notable appearances in films such as “Lagaan,” “Nayak,” “Shakti,” “Slumdog Millionaire,” “Wanted,” “Halla Bol,” and “Rakt Charitra,” often portraying villainous or tough characters.
Despite his extensive film work, it was in 2009 that he gained widespread recognition through “Mann Ki Awaaz Pratigya.” His role as Thakur Sajjan Singh resonated deeply with viewers, leading many to recognize him more by his character’s name than his own. Following this success, he continued to act in several television series, including “Pratigya 2,” “Krishna Chali London,” and “Doli Armaano Ki.”
In his later years, Shyam faced significant health challenges, battling a severe kidney condition that required regular dialysis. Financial difficulties arose due to the high cost of treatment, prompting his brother to seek public assistance. In a turn of fate, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath learned of Shyam’s situation and provided ₹20 lakh for his medical care, which allowed him to continue treatment.
Shyam expressed his gratitude, noting that the Chief Minister personally appreciated his work. He experienced a brief recovery and returned to filming “Mann Ki Awaaz Pratigya 2,” but his health continued to decline.
Anupam Shyam passed away on August 8, 2021, at the age of 63, in a Mumbai hospital. His death sent shockwaves through the television and film industry, leaving behind a legacy of memorable performances and an enduring impact on Indian entertainment.
