Kathmandu, December 4 (Daily Kiran) – The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has eased restrictions on the use of high denomination Indian currency notes in Nepal by amending existing regulations related to the circulation of Nepali and Indian rupees.

Through the Foreign Exchange Management (Export and Import of Currency) Amendment Regulations 2025, the RBI has permitted the carrying of Indian currency notes above ₹100, including ₹200 and ₹500 denomination notes, into Nepal and Bhutan. Under the revised rules, travelers going from India to Nepal or Bhutan can now carry up to ₹25,000 in Indian currency.

Similarly, individuals traveling from Nepal or Bhutan to India are also allowed to bring Indian currency notes exceeding ₹100 denomination up to ₹25,000. The regulations also allow the movement of Nepalese and Bhutanese currency outside India and its return, facilitating smoother currency exchange for travelers. However, this facility is not extended to citizens of Pakistan and Bangladesh.

Previously, there was a ban on the circulation of high denomination Indian notes in Nepal. The new provision will take effect after the Nepal Rastra Bank implements a corresponding arrangement. This change is expected to benefit tourists and workers traveling between India and Nepal.
