New Delhi, September 26 (Udaipur Kiran News). The central government has introduced a major change in the ration distribution system to ease the lives of poor and middle-class families. Under the new system, ration card holders will now be able to collect ration for three months at one time instead of visiting every month

New system to improve food security
The decision comes after challenges faced during the COVID-19 pandemic, when long queues and delays in distribution highlighted flaws in the monthly ration system. By allowing three months’ ration to be taken at once, the government aims to strengthen food security and provide relief in emergencies.
Who will benefit?
The scheme covers all ration card holders under the National Food Security Act (NFSA), Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY), Priority Household (PHH), and the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY). No new application is required; existing beneficiaries will automatically be eligible.
The rollout has already started in some states and is expected to expand nationwide by the end of 2025. Families will get ration according to their entitlement for three months in advance.
Technology-driven distribution
To prevent black marketing, the new system will use smart ration cards and OTP verification. In some states, door-to-door delivery is also being planned through mobile vans and government vehicles, benefiting the elderly, disabled, women, and people living alone.
Items covered under ration
The distribution may vary by state, but will generally include wheat or rice, pulses, salt, edible oil, and in some states, sugar. These essential items will now be provided for three months together.
The government believes this reform will save families’ time and money, ensure fair distribution, and provide relief to millions across India.
