Ram Gopal Varma Delays Sarkar Series to Work on Syndicate Inspired by Dhurdhar 2

Mumbai, March 26: Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma has expressed his admiration for Aditya Dhar’s recent release, ‘Dhurdhar 2’. Taking to social media platform X, he shared intriguing insights about his childhood dreams and announced that he will be working on ‘Syndicate’ instead of continuing with the ‘Sarkar’ series.

Varma reminisced about his aspirations at the age of ten, when he dreamed of becoming an auto-rickshaw driver, captivated by the sound of the accelerator. In a lengthy note, he reflected, “Change is the only constant we all grow up with. My dreams evolved continuously during my early years.”

He elaborated, “At ten, I wanted to be an auto-rickshaw driver. By fifteen, inspired by my cousin, I wished to live in the jungle. A few years later, I dreamed of becoming an engineer, but eventually decided to pursue directing.”

The filmmaker also discussed his reading habits, mentioning his fondness for Enid Blyton’s books. However, he was particularly influenced by James Hadley Chase and later by Frederick Forsyth. He noted that new experiences shape us and raise our benchmarks.

Regarding his films, Varma cited ‘The Sound of Music’ (which inspired ‘Rangeela’), ‘The Exorcist’ (which influenced ‘Raat’ and ‘Bhoot’), and ‘The Godfather’ (which inspired ‘Satya’, ‘Company’, and the ‘Sarkar’ series) as his benchmark films. He primarily drew inspiration from ‘The Godfather’.

He praised ‘Dhurdhar: The Revenge’ highly, stating that it impacted him so much that he has postponed the next installment of the ‘Sarkar’ franchise to focus on ‘Syndicate’. Varma explained, “Why Syndicate and not Sarkar? The story of Syndicate is based on the premise of what would happen if India’s entire law and order system collapsed in a single day. It will be horror-like, but without supernatural elements, showcasing the horrific aspects hidden in the human mind. It tells the story of an organization that becomes so powerful and organized that it poses a threat to the nation’s existence.”

Varma further stated that after watching ‘Dhurdhar 2’, his previous films seem insignificant. If ‘The Godfather’ was his benchmark before, he now considers ‘Dhurdhar 2’ as the ‘Godfather of Godfathers’. Every aspect of the film—from storytelling, characters, background music, action, to performances—left a profound impact on him.

He referred to Aditya Dhar as his new mentor, urging filmmakers, writers, and stars to deeply study ‘Dhurdhar 2’ and radically shift their old thinking, or risk becoming obsolete in the film industry.
