New Delhi, March 19: Defense Minister Rajnath Singh addressed the National Defense Industries Conclave in New Delhi on Thursday. He highlighted the significant role of drones and counter-drone technology in modern warfare, especially in light of ongoing conflicts like those between Russia and Ukraine, as well as Iran and Israel.
Singh emphasized the urgent need for India to establish a self-reliant drone manufacturing ecosystem. This self-sufficiency is crucial not only at the product level but also at the component level. He stated that all elements, from drone modules to software, engines, and batteries, should be produced within India. This task is challenging, as many countries that manufacture drones rely on critical components imported from China.
The National Defense Industries Conclave aims to promote indigenous defense equipment manufacturing. It represents a significant effort to establish a robust framework for defense production in India. The focus is particularly on integrating private companies and small and medium enterprises (SMEs) into this sector, enabling them to participate in defense manufacturing. Singh asserted that achieving complete self-reliance in drone manufacturing is essential for India’s defense preparedness and strategic autonomy.
He called upon the SMEs and other stakeholders present, stating that the country needs their involvement in this mission. The government will provide comprehensive support to facilitate this initiative. Singh urged everyone to work collaboratively in mission mode to transform India into a global hub for indigenous drone manufacturing by 2030.
He noted that the development of a nation’s defense industrial ecosystem relies on the collaboration of large industries, SMEs, startups, and innovators, alongside a clear policy push from the government based on national defense needs. Singh remarked that significant changes often begin with small ideas and efforts, encouraging those working in their respective fields to recognize that today’s small beginnings can lead to tomorrow’s great successes.
He pointed out that the industrial contribution to India’s GDP is around 15-16%, indicating vast potential for SMEs to grow. Strengthening the manufacturing sector can further bolster the economy. The responsibility to advance in this direction now lies with the industry and innovators.
The Defense Minister stated that it is the duty of every citizen. Over the past decade, the government has taken several important steps to empower the SME sector. Since 2014, the Prime Minister has consistently focused on expanding this sector. Digital platforms like the Udyam Portal and Udyam Assist Portal have been launched to simplify the registration and identification of SMEs, connecting them to government schemes.
He highlighted the impressive growth in the number of SMEs, which increased from approximately 4.67 crore in 2012-13 to nearly 8 crore today. Singh reiterated that a strong innovation ecosystem can only be built through collective effort. If everyone advances with full strength and dedication, the nation can achieve its goals.
He also mentioned that 58 prototypes have been approved for procurement, with an average value of approximately ₹3,853 crore. Additionally, 45 procurement contracts have been signed, valued at around ₹2,326 crore. These figures indicate that innovation is gradually manifesting as products and technologies, with startups and SMEs playing an increasingly vital role.
