Rain Continues in Uttarakhand; Helicopter Services Halted from Matli to Dharali

Dehradun, August 11Heavy rains continue to lash Uttarakhand, prompting the Meteorological Department to issue a red alert for Almora, Dehradun, Haridwar, Nainital, Pauri Garhwal, and Udham Singh Nagar districts. Water levels in all major rivers are rising rapidly, with several flowing close to the danger mark. In Uttarkashi, helicopter services from Matli helipad to Dharali have been suspended due to poor weather, halting rescue operations in the area.

The Badrinath highway remains closed due to landslides, while the Kedarnath Yatra has been halted because of bad weather. Gangotri and Yamunotri pilgrimages have also been suspended.

The red alert covers areas including Lansdowne, Roorkee, Raiwala, Kotdwar, Ramnagar, Kashipur, Ranikhet, and Lalkuan, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall. The State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) has directed all districts to remain on high alert. SDMA Secretary Vinod Suman said special vigilance is being maintained along riverbanks, and security forces are closely monitoring sensitive areas.

In Uttarkashi, District Magistrate confirmed that all stranded pilgrims have been rescued, with only local residents remaining in the affected zones. Adequate arrangements, including food supplies, have been made for them. Vehicle movement has resumed at Ganganani after a Bailey bridge was installed in place of the damaged one, and repairs are underway at Dabran to restore road connectivity.
