Raigad Fort is among Maharashtra’s most significant forts. It was carved into a mountain approximately 25 kilometers from Mahad. In 1674, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj renovated the fort and declared it the capital of the Maratha Empire. The journey to the fort is not easy, requiring visitors to navigate multiple steps. However, in response to the increasing number of tourists, the Maharashtra government has introduced a cable car service.
Nearby Raigad Fort is an artificial lake known as “Gangasagar Lake.” The only access point to the fort is through the “Maha-Darwaja.” A unique feature of the fort is its construction technique. There is a replica of a throne that connects the palace door to the throne room. It is believed that if something is spoken at the replica, it can be heard in the throne room inside the fort.
The view outside Raigad Fort offers tranquility, with natural waterfalls, beautiful wildflowers, and a plethora of trees. Although the path is challenging, it is a fantastic spot for trekking enthusiasts. However, it is advisable to avoid visiting during the summer months, as temperatures can soar up to 50 degrees Celsius, making trekking difficult due to humidity. Visitors should bring their own food and drinks, as amenities are limited near the fort.
