New Delhi, February 11: In a recent statement in the Lok Sabha, Opposition Leader Rahul Gandhi emphasized that India cannot be equated with Pakistan. He argued that if the ‘India’ alliance were to negotiate with the United States, it would do so on equal terms.
During the budget discussion, Gandhi stated, “If the ‘India’ alliance were negotiating with President Donald Trump, we would make it clear that the most crucial asset in this equation is Indian data. We would tell President Trump that if he wants to protect his dollars, he needs to understand that the greatest asset lies with the Indians.”
He further asserted, “We would emphasize that any negotiations must be between equals, not in a master-servant dynamic. Furthermore, we would make it clear that there can be no compromise on India’s energy security. While the US may need to protect its farmers, we too will protect ours.”
Gandhi insisted that the ‘India’ alliance would negotiate as an equal power, ensuring that India is not treated like Pakistan. He noted, “If President Trump decides that the Pakistan Army Chief will have breakfast with him, we will have something to say about that.”
Questioning the trade deal, Gandhi expressed concern that the government has relinquished control over digital trade rules, which could transform India into a superpower. He criticized the removal of data localization and the allowance of free flow of data to the US, as well as the imposition of caps on digital taxes and exemptions on source code disclosures.
He warned that post-deal, the US would dictate where India can purchase oil, undermining the government’s autonomy. He claimed that such trade arrangements could limit India’s strategic autonomy in energy procurement.
