Raghav Chadha Raises Concerns Over Packaged Juice Misleading Branding in Rajya Sabha

New Delhi, March 24: Raghav Chadha, a Rajya Sabha MP from the Aam Aadmi Party, recently took to the social media platform ‘X’ to address a pressing issue. He questioned, “Do you really think you are drinking fruit juice? Think again. Major food brands are selling sweetened water in packages adorned with images of ‘fresh fruits,’ while the truth is hidden in small print on the back that states, ‘Images are for marketing purposes only.’”

Chadha emphasized the importance of this topic during a parliamentary session, stating that misleading branding and false advertising are pushing millions, especially children, towards diabetes and lifestyle-related diseases. He asserted that it is time to reveal the truth behind the juice boxes.

In his speech, Chadha pointed out that India’s consumer market is plagued by a significant issue known as deceptive branding and false advertising. When consumers purchase fruit juice, they are often greeted with large images of fresh juice on the front, while the back contains disclaimers in tiny text indicating that these images are merely for marketing. Young people in the country consume these beverages under the impression that they are healthy and nutritious, unaware that they are actually drinking a sugar-laden solution that can lead to diabetes and other lifestyle diseases.

He posed a crucial question to the government: “What steps are being taken to ensure a ban on misleading images?” He further inquired, “How are we ensuring that information about sugar content is prominently displayed on the packaging, and how can we clarify whether the product is actual fruit juice or a beverage laden with sugar and preservatives?”
