PV Sindhu Exits Malaysia Open After Semifinal Defeat to Wang Zhiyi

In Kuala Lumpur, India’s top badminton player PV Sindhu bowed out of the Malaysia Open after losing in the semifinals. On Saturday, Sindhu was defeated by world number two Chinese shuttler Wang Zhiyi with scores of 16-21, 15-21.

Coming back from a recent foot injury, Sindhu was unable to maintain pressure against the two-time Olympic medallist Wang. Despite gaining an early lead of 11-6 in the second game, Sindhu could not hold on, marking a disappointing end to her campaign in the tournament.

Competitive Start but Wang Zhiyi Edges Ahead

Sindhu started the match strongly, delivering powerful shots and sharp cross-court smashes to take a 5-2 lead. However, Wang’s delicate touch shots helped her gradually level the score. At one point in the first game, Sindhu led 9-7, but Wang made a comeback and went into the interval with a slender advantage after Sindhu missed a net shot.

The contest remained close with the score tied at 13-13 after the break. Wang then increased her aggression, pulling ahead to 18-14. Despite a long rally where Sindhu saved a point, Wang secured four game points and sealed the opener as Sindhu’s shot went wide.

Sindhu’s Early Lead in Second Game Fades

In the second game, Sindhu slipped to 1-3 after a couple of unforced errors but quickly rallied to take a 6-3 lead. She continued to dominate with sharp angles and strong rallies, extending her advantage to 11-6 by the mid-game break.

However, Wang responded with a fierce comeback after the break. Sindhu maintained her lead at 13-9 with near-perfect net shots, but Wang gradually clawed back to level at 13-13. Eventually, Wang’s sustained pressure forced mistakes from Sindhu, allowing her to pull ahead 16-13 and close out the match.

This defeat ends Sindhu’s run at the Malaysia Open, as she continues to recover form post-injury.
